Knowledge-seeking and firm international performance: evidence from Chinese multinational enterprise’s OFDI

Abstract: Chinese multinational enterprises show the strong trend of knowledge-seeking in outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) in developed markets (DMs). This study examines whether and to what extent knowledge seeking OFDI improves their international performance. Our results indicate that Chinese multinational enterprises OFDI in DMs, when the number of patents applied (or R&D investments) in a DM host market increased by 1%, the foreign sales intensity of the Chinese multinational enterprises increase by about 0.2%.
